We are seeking to appoint a Senior Research Fellow in Optical Diagnostics for Bioengineering Applications for a post funded by a prestigious Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) grant that focusses on the development of a new generation of wound dressings.
This £3.2M 6-year project aims to provide a technological platform based on biomimetic biomaterials to develop new wound dressings with tissue healing and diagnostic properties (i.e. theranostic wound dressings). You will have the opportunity to be part of a dynamic multi-disciplinary team bringing together 13 researchers and 5 postdocs with expertise in chemistry, material science/engineering, computer modelling, applied molecular and cell biology, genomics and podiatry. Your role plays a central part in the project and you will be responsible for preparing new optical experiments and gathering data on the interaction between exudates and wound dressing samples.
Part of this role will see you investigate changes in fluid dynamics, protein and cell absorption across control and surface-functionalised wound dressings, and later develop a spray system for the efficient deposition of biomimetic probes detecting relevant markers of tissue in-growth. You will be working in close collaborations with other post-doctoral researchers on this project, including one focused numerical simulations of your experiments.
In this role you will undertake leading-edge experimental research in bioengineering, develop your current skills and knowledge base, and collaborate with other world-leading researchers in the field. In order to be successful in this post, you should have:

  • A good (1 or 2:1) degree in Engineering, Physics, Biomedical Sciences/Engineering or in any other relevant discipline
  • Good written and oral communication skills and an attitude of open and active collaboration are essential for the role.
  • Experience in setting up custom and delicate instruments in purpose built optical laboratories, demonstrating a great attention to detail and safe working practices
  • Experience of analysis of large and complex data sets

A PhD in physics or engineering with a strong experimental background in optical and/or laser measurement techniques applied to flows and/or surfaces would be desirable.
For full details of this role and the criteria that you will need to meet, please see the attached job description and person specification.
Informal enquiries about this opportunity are encouraged and should be addressed to Prof. Cyril Crua (c.crua@brighton.ac.uk).
This post is full-time, fixed term for 30 months, and we welcome applications from candidates seeking to job share.
