Role Overview & Responsibilities

The Research Informatics team at the Centre for Medicines Discovery (CMD) provides data management and informatics capabilities to major biomedical and drug discovery projects, including within large multinational consortia and with pharmaceutical companies worldwide. We develop and support novel approaches to managing multimodal data from early discovery research through to translational and experimental medicine and play a leading role in defining policy and strategy in effective data management and sharing approaches. For example, the team have recently built and maintained an end-to-end data management solution for the UK Government/Office for National Statistics’ (ONS) COVID-19 Surveillance programme, supporting data flows from sample collection through to daily delivery to ONS. This plays a critical role in the UK Government’s COVID-19 strategy.
To support our work, we are seeking to appoint a Research Software Engineer to develop novel technical solutions for data collection, integration and sharing, ensuring that they are available to the team and our customers, to facilitate excellent end-to-end research data lifecycles. We are particularly focussed on providing ready-to-run, containerised, platforms suitable for use in a cloud infrastructure.
You will be embedded, with our team, within a unique multidisciplinary environment, working with scientists and world-leading researchers both within Oxford and around the world, focussing on global health challenges, providing opportunities to really make an impact in the development of new medicines.
If you have experience of working with diverse and often large data problems, have significant full-stack development experience including Python, R, PHP, JavaScript and contemporary frameworks such as Angular and React, and knowledge of database platforms such as MySQL and PostgreSQL, along with a passion and enthusiasm for data wrangling then this role is for you. Having experience of working within a biomedical or drug discovery environment would be highly desirable but not essential as we can provide support around the scientific aspects of the role.
An appointment at a lower grade may also be considered for a less experienced candidate (with a Bachelor’s degree minimum requirement and suitable adjustment of responsibilities).
Applications for this vacancy are to be made online and you will be required to upload a supporting statement and CV as part of your online application. Your supporting statement must explain how you meet each of the selection criteria for the post using examples of your skills and experience.
This position is offered full time on a fixed term contract for 3 years and is funded by RI SRF.
Only applications received before 12 midday on 27th June 2023 will be considered. Please quote 165777 on all correspondence.
